1 INSIDE OUT FRENCH BRAID & 2 TWISTS

Let’s say your friend is getting married. And let’s say she asks you to help her with her hair. And let’s say you panic. This has happened to a few people I know recently, and it’s mostly because destination weddings are such a big thing right now. People are getting married in rural countryside barns, on a lake, in the forest and on scenic hill tops all across the country. Often when a bride is getting hitched in the middle of nowhere, they’ll call on their most stylish friend to help them look their best on the big day. This little updo should be a great help in a situation like that because if you know how to french braid inside out, then you can probably master this updo with a teeny bit of practice. Obviously, the girl in the photo is doing this on her own hair (which is why we create these tutorials), but you can easily translate to this look and do it on a friend’s hair. My biggest tip with this ‘do is to let it be a little messy. It’s very “swirly” which leaves room to improvise as you go. We didn’t use a ton of hairspray here, but if you have a lot of layers you may need to use a little more as you go for added support. This can be done on hair that’s shoulder length and longer. All you need is a little something to tuck under like you see her doing in photo 4. Alright… here we go!

1. Divide your hair diagonally into 3 sections as you see above. Push the 2 side sections in front of your shoulders.

2. Do an inside-out french braid. You’ll want to go just past the bottom hairline so you have room to tuck the hair under later.

3. Gently and slowly, pull the inside out french braid apart. Keep pulling until it starts to look like loose “loops”. Note: This is where it gets tricky for those of you with layers, but don’t worry too much. You can always twist them back into the mix later! Besides, some loose pieces are good! Use a little hairspray here to secure if you feel the need!

4. Now tuck the tail of the braid under and pin it using large bobbypins for strong support.

5. Once you’ve tucked it and pinned it, the back of your hair should look like this. (See photo 5)

6. Next, take one of your side pieces and give it a light tease to thicken it up.

7. Twist it and drape it across the back. Pin it behind the ear on the opposite side and blend the ends of it into one of the loops from the braid.

8. Repeat the teasing process of the other side.

9. Drape it across the back and over the previous twist (you can even weave it through a loop if you wanna get really fancy), then pin it behind the ear on the other side. Again, blend the ends of the twist into one of the loops from the braid.

10. Add extra bobbypins to secure any pieces that feel unstable. Spray all over with a firm holding hairspray at the end!

KITCHEN BEAUTICIAN: HOMEMADE LIP STAIN

For those of you concerned about what chemicals we’re putting in and on our bodies, you can’t get more natural than this homemade berry lip stain! We love it because it adds the perfect “just-bitten” hint of color to fake that Snow White luscious lip! Here’s how to do it yourself:

INGREDIENTS: 3 Blackberries (for their bright berry color), 1 Raspberry (for its feminine pink color), 3 Pomegranate Seeds (for their vibrant red color), 1/2 teaspoon edible oil (I used Extra Virgin Olive Oil), a small Bowl + Spoon (or mortar + pestle if you have them), Fork or Sifter to drain, small 5-gram Pot/Jar with screw top from any craft store

STEP 1: Mash the blackberries and raspberry in the bowl thoroughly with the back of your spoon.

STEP 2: Add the pomegranate juice into the mixture by individually squeezing them between your thumb and index fingers over the bowl.

STEP 3: Pour the olive oil into the bowl and stir everything together with your spoon.

STEP 4: Finish by draining the liquid from the mixture into your small portable jar.

For application, use your fingers, a lip brush or a Q-tip. It’ll only be good for a few days so refrigerate it for longevity. Have fun with it and even try different fruits (acai berries, cherries, etc)! You can play with the ratios of each fruit to customize your desired shade but you’ll get the most color payoff from the blackberries.

Pretty Vamp

This beauty how-to is for those of you who’ve always been curious to know if you can pull off a vamp lip but not enough to buy anything. Well get this: all you need is your black kohl eyeliner pencil (yes you heard right!). It’s one of the oldest methods in makeup and has quite the payoff. Plus I wanted to show you the whole look so you can see there is a feminine and fun way to do it. I’m hoping you’ll be surprised at how wearable a dark vamp lip actually is and it might even open the door to a whole world of dark lipsticks for you. Here’s how:

TOOLS:

1. Black kohl eyeliner pencil — I used this Sephora Collection Kohl Pencil on Taye because it’s super smudge-able and blendable.

2. Lip gloss – I used this Lancôme Juicy Tube but you can also use any gloss (even clear) because the black foundation is already powerful.

3. Lip brush — this Stila Lip Brush has been one of my favorites for years because of its short + angled bristles and because it’s portable.

4. Gold cream or powder eyeshadow – I used this Maybelline Colour Tattoo but if you want a powder version, try this Shiseido Shadow.

5. Black liquid liner — I used this Benefit Magic Ink Liner because it doesn’t feather and the handle is really user friendly.

6. Red metallic liquid liner (optional) — obsessed with the Make Up For Ever Aqua Linerthat I used above.

7. Mascara — I used this soft and pet-able Bobbi Brown Mascara because it won’t smudge.

8. Nude blush — I used Chanel Blush in Orchid Rose as it’s the only nude I’ve used on my clients for a couple years now.

9. Blush brush — This NARS Yachiyo Brush #27 is my favorite to swirl precisely on the apples of the cheeks but it’s definitely an investment so you can of course use your favorite blush brush.

STEPS:

LIPS:

1. Start by outlining the lip with the black kohl pencil then fill in the entire area.

2. Apply the gloss with a lip brush so you can blend in any black smudges.

EYES:

1. Apply the gold cream shadow all over the lid + crease with your finger. You can absolutely substitute this with a gold powder shadow if that’s what you have on hand.

2. Apply the red metallic liquid liner along the lashline from the inner corner to the outer corner then winged out and up. You can substitute it with a dark purple liquid liner if you like the idea of liner with two colors, or just draw the whole line + wing with the black liquid liner.

3. Draw a line below the red liner with a black liquid liner to sharpen it and make it more interesting.

4. Add a coat of mascara.

CHEEKS:

Swirl the nude blush over the apples of your cheeks to bring a little life to this strong statement.

Red Velvet Cupcake Recipe

Red velvet cupcakes are a big hit at any holiday party and especially at Valentine's Day parties. Kids even love them without frosting. A traditional cream cheese frosting tastes absolutely incredible on these cupcakes, but feel free to experiment and find a perfect frosting and cupcake combination just for you.

INGREDIENTS

• 2 1/2 cups all purpose flour

• 2 cups sugar

• 1/2 cup baking cocoa (powdered)

• 1 teaspoon baking powder

• 1/4 teaspoon salt

• 1 teaspoon baking soda

• 2 sticks butter at room temperature

• 5 large eggs

• 1 cup buttermilk (see note at bottom)

• 1 teaspoon vanilla

• 1 teaspoon red food coloring

RED VELVET CUPCAKE RECIPE DIRECTIONS

Combine flour, cocoa, baking powder, baking soda and salt in a mixing bowl.  Sift dry ingredients three times. 

Cream together butter and sugar until light and fluffy.  Add eggs one at a time, making sure to beat well after each egg. 

Add 1/4 of dry ingredients to creamed mixture then approximately 1/4 of buttermilk alternating until mixed well.  Mix in vanilla and food coloring.

Fill lined cupcake pans 1/2 full of red velvet batter.  Bake in a preheated 350 degree oven for approximately 20 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.

Cool cupcakes in pans for 5 to 10 minutes then remove from pans.  Cool completely on wire racks before frosting.

NOTE:  If you don't happen to have buttermilk on hand you can try this simple substitution.  Place one tablespoon of lemon juice or white vinegar in an empty one cup measuring cup.  Fill with milk to 1 cup.  Let stand for 5 minutes then use in any cake recipe that calls for buttermilk.

CUPCAKE TIP

Some people may argue that there is no need to sift flour these days since most flours are sifted prior to packaging.  With these particular cupcakes, it is best for the texture of the cupcakes to do the sifting as directed.  The sifting also allows the dry ingredients to be thoroughly mixed before proceeding to the additional steps.
